This page contains some common questions we receive along with some nifty answers to complement them. If you cannot find an answer to a question you have somewhere in this Information section, feel free to contact us. We will add more questions and answers as we receive them.
- Clean Access tells me I have temporary access. Can I get around the security system temporarily?
No. According to the computing agreement, all computers must remain udpated at all times. It is the responsibility of the student to remain up-to-date. You should research for yourself when Microsoft plans to release new patches, so that you will be prepared for the update. If you cannot get online for some reason, and it is an "emergency," remember that most colleges and departments, along with the library, have free, open computer labs.
- Can I bring more than one computer to campus?
Yes, but remember that you can only use one device at a time (because there is only one network port per person).
- Can I get a second Internet port put in my room?
No. We simply do not have the capacity on the network for each student to have more than one computer.
- Can I bring a switch, hub, or router to provide myself with extra Internet ports?
No. Attaching additional networking hardware to the Cal Poly residence hall network is against state and federal law, University Housing, Apartment/Residential Life, ResNet, and Information Technology Services policies. In addition, additional networking hardware can cause entire floors and, sometimes, entire halls to lose their Internet connection.
- I can't get a wireless signal in my room. Can I bring my own wireless access point?
No. Review the the answer to question #4.
- I never got a virus with my old antivirus client. Why did I get a virus with Cal Poly's antivirus client? Can I go back to my old client?
Prior to coming to campus, your computer probably resided in a small, simple network. When you are on campus, you are attached to a network with literally thousands of computers. Chances of getting an infection are, unfortunately, just higher. Our version of Symantec AntiVirus is used by large corporate networks around the world. Overall, it has proven to be the best antivirus solution for our campus. You will not be able to use a different antivirus client.
- Why can't I use Microsoft Windows Server platforms?
It is against our network policies to run a server of any kind in the residence halls. In addition, Cisco Clean Access does not support Windows server based operating systems.
- Can I get a port opened on the firewall for my computer? Can I setup my computer to use a virtual private network (VPN)?
No. We do not provide students with access around the Internet network firewall. Some ports have been locked down for security reasons, and we do not make exceptions for anyone.
- Can I use a gaming console, like XBox or PlayStation, in the residence halls?
Clean Access has been configured with special rules to detect and allow gaming consoles on the network. In the past we have had residents use XBox, XBox 360, PlayStation 2, PSP, and NintendoDS with most games. Not all games will work on campus. This is due to security policies in Clean Access. You should recall (from our network policies) that the network is designed for educational use only. This doesn't mean that you can't use a gaming console for networked entertainment purposes, but you should understand that we do NOT provide any support for these types of devices and applications.
- How do you spell "ResNet"?
Our department name, ResNet, is spelled R-e-s-N-e-t.
- Are there lockers in the Yosemite Hall bathrooms?
There are no lockers in the Yosemite Hall bathrooms. Or the Sierra Madre bathrooms, for that matter.
