Remote Assistance through JRDesktop

Welcome to the ResNet Remote Assistance website. The Remote Assistance service asks your web browser to start an application on your computer. With your explicit permission, the application will allow a ResNet technician to directly view and interact with your computer's desktop wihtout having to physically visit your room. Using this website users can launch the service and connect to a unique "help session" with a ResNet technician.

How This Works

The Remote Assistance service asks your web browser to start an application called JRDesktop. The application allows a ResNet technician to establish a direct connection with your computer and interact with your desktop. To launch the service, you must connect to a "help session." A help session consists of a unique identification number, the Help Session ID, that identifies the connection between your computer and the ResNet technician. Each Help Session ID is valid for a single use (so you need to get a new one each time you use this service). Please contact our office if you do not already have a Help Session ID.

Java Version Check

The Remote Assistance service requires Java 6 or higher. You can visit our Java Version Check page to see if you meet the minimum requirements.

What To Do

  • Contact the ResNet office and obtain a Help Session ID.
  • At the bottom of this page enter your Help Session ID and select the "Connect" button.
  • Your web browser will prompt you to download a file. You should choose to "Run" or "Open" the file. If you save the file, navigate to where you downloaded it and double click on it.

    Step 1

  • A "Java starting..." window will appear as the application is downloaded.

    Step 2

  • When starting the application, a security dialog may appear. Verify the application is published by Cal Poly ResNet, select "Always trust content from this publisher," and select the Run button.

    Step 3

  • If you have a firewall, you will need to unblock the Java Virtual Machine. Sometimes the Java Virtual Machine is labeled "Java Platform SE."
