Want to make getting online when you arrive on campus faster and easier?

  • Uninstall antivirus software trials

Many new computers come with a trial of an antivirus program. The most common trial we encounter is McAfee antivirus protection, Norton antivirus, and Norton Internet Security. We ask that all students remove these trials and install Symantec Endpoint Protection. Details on this are available below.

  • Uninstall any and all P2P programs.

The removal of file sharing programs such as LimeWire, BitTorrent, and BearShare will reduce the possibility of judicial actions taken against you in the even of unlawful copyright violations. Visit our P2P pages for more information.

  • Install Symantec Endpoint Protection.

We require all students to have an antivirus program when connecting to our network. If you do not have one Cal Poly provides a powerful and free antivirus software (Symantec Endpoint Protection) for all Cal Poly students and staff.
To download this, log into your MyCalPoly Portal, click the Service Request tab under the Single Click Access to... section, find the Software request button on the left, click the new button in the top toolbar, scroll to the Publisher Name field and click on the magnifying glass located to the right of the box (this will open up a new window), in the search bar at the top of the window type in, without the quotes, "Symantec" then click go, a list of records will appear under the sofware titles, click the bubble next to the appropriate software compatible with your computer, then click the import/replace button below. Be sure to read the technical notes and ensure your computer is compatible with the minimum requirements, then scroll down and click the yes bubble after you have read and agree to the Cal Poly Licensing Agreements, then click the download bubble. Click on the new tab to the right called Serial & Download Info, your screen will be redirected and the option to download your software will appear in front of you. Start your download then click finish. After it finishes downloading, install the software.

  • ResNet highly recommends users keep up with Windows Updates.

Keeping your Windows PC up to date with the most recent security updates from Microsoft protects your computer against malicious attacks and spyware. For more information on keeping Windows up to date, click on the Support link on the left navigation menu, and select your operating system.

  • ResNet highly recommends Windows users install Javacool's SpywareBlaster.

This software can be downloaded for free at Javacool Software's website free of charge. This program prevents harmful sites from attacking your computer.

  • ResNet highly recommends Windows XP users download and install Windows Defender.

Defender can be obtained for free from Microsoft's website. Windows Vista users already have this software installed on their machines.

To connect to the network, your computer must support 10/100 Base-T or compatible Ethernet connections.

You must also bring an Ethernet cable. It is recommended that Poly Canyon Village residents use a CAT 6 Ethernet cable to access the wired network connection in their room. All other on campus residents should purchase a CAT 5 or CAT 5e cable to access the network. The cable is commonly referred to as a CAT-5, CAT-5e, or CAT-6 cable. Any of these cable types will be compatible with the residential network. The cable's plastic plug is approximately twice as wide as a normal telephone cable's plug. An example of the Ethernet cable plug is shown above.

  • Before you move in, familiarize yourself with network rules and regulations.

You can access these by visiting the Policies page.

  • You should understand the responsibilities and potential risks in using P2P programs to download media from the web.

    P2P Information.

  • Whenever you access the network in your room or residence hall, you will need to authenticate through a web browser.

  • Wireless printing is only allowed through a bluetooth connection.

Please refer to our hardware information for more information on printers in the dorm room.
  • Cal Poly will provide you with Antivirus and Antispyware clients that are compatible with network requirements.

You do not need to purchase Antivirus or Antispyware protection. See the Information section for more information.

  • ResNet does not support software labeled "Alpha" or "Beta".

These releases are considered too new and unstable to be allowed on the network and will interfere with your network access.

  • Students are issued one network port through which to access the network.

This does not mean that you cannot bring more than one computer to school, just be aware that you only have access to one port from your room.

  • Students are not permitted to use a switch, hub or router to provide themselves with extra internet ports.

Again, please refer to the links on our Policies page.

  • Many gaming consoles have been able to access the network in the past, however due to network regulations, not all gaming systems or specific games will be able to gain access.

This doesn't mean that you can't use a gaming console for networked entertainment purposes, but you should understand that we do NOT provide any support for these types of devices and applications.

  • Educate and protect yourself in the use of digital communities,

such as Facebook, Myspace, and Tribes.

  • Please respect other users on the network.

The University has placed rules and regulations regarding network usage to protect its users and their access to network resources. Following these rules will help to minimize the number of network outages that may occur during the year and will prevent judicial action being taken against you.
